Tips to Improve Communication with the Elderly

Have you ever felt difficult to communicate effectively with your grandfather or grandmother? They didn't what you are saying clearly. It because sensory losses on them. 

Here's are some tips that will assist you in learning how to communicate more effectively with the elderly.

Site face to face
According to American Academy of Family Physician (AAFP) is sitting face to face with an elderly person can help to facilitate communication. Many older people have visual and hearing loses and it may rely upon lip-reading or facial cues to understand what you are saying. Sitting face to face also give them the feeling that you think they are important. Maintain eye contact, as this is a powerful form of nonverbal communication that tell the other elderly that you are engaged and interested in that conversation.

Respect differences
Generational gaps can create differences in opinion, views, and general outlook on life. An attitude of respect and tollerance for differing belief can help you to better handle communiations with the elderly. Awareness of these differences can help you to avoid misunderstanding or accidental result. Have respect of elderly person.
Communicate clearly
Clear communication skills are vital when communicating not only with the elderly. Speak clearly using an appropriate volume and rate of speech. So that person can understand you. 

Listen
Truly listen to the person you are speaking with. Good communication with the elderly depends on good listening according to the American Academy of Family Physician (AAFP). Listen to what they have to say, and remember that you will not be the only person struggling to communicate. They'll be finding it just as difficult from the other side. Make it known that you are listening to them by responding to what they are saying. A simple nod, smile, or word of acknowledgment is sometimes enough. Ask questions if you are unsure of what they are trying to say to help them communicate their point more effectively.

Be patient
Patience is essential when it comes to communicating effectively with the elderly. If you need to repeat something several times, try not to get irritated and frustated. Try to maintain a calm and emphatic attitude.
